The East-Meets-West on Innovation and Entrepreneurship Congress and Exhibition will be held on 1 to 4 September 2012 at the University of Cyprus.

The event is organized by the European Office of Cyprus to promote and implement new tools of effective collaboration between business and academia. For the first time, distinguished scientists from the Middle East, North Africa and Europe will collaborate closely with Business to promote and implement effective collaboration between science, technology and business while sharing the common goal: to harness the potential of entrepreneurship by transferring innovation ideas into products and services. Both the congress and the exhibition events are of significant importance on a local, regional and European level.

The Conference aims to promote cross-national collaboration between East and West as a tool to overcome national limitations on knowledge, financial resources, technology and services while taking into consideration the regional and European aspects. The congress aims to improve links between scientific and business communities, promote private sector investment in science, innovation and enterprise development, encourage SMEs and scientists to exploit global knowledge resources and increase innovation financing mechanisms.

Diogenes Business Incubator University of Cyprus is Chairing the Session: Innovative Entrepreneurship Support Systems.

Session Description

As the world strives for a recovery from the economic crisis and a bounce back from the recession, overall economic development strategy, entrepreneur and small business policies need to focus on three related policies:

• Creating more entrepreneurs and small business owners who are actively engaged in enterprise creation — building and filling the pipeline
• Creating better skilled entrepreneurs and small business owners who apply these skills to enterprise development
• Building stronger, more productive and competitive businesses as a result of the activities of entrepreneurs and small business owners.

The goal is a comprehensive entrepreneurial ecosystem. To reach this end one should examine, firstly, what must such an ecosystem entail, who are the pioneers, whether countries, communities, or individual organization initiatives, how they got there, what are their best practices, and how is best for other countries/communities to “copy” and implement these best practices and lessons in order to instigate and further facilitate the creation and sustainability of comprehensive innovative entrepreneurship support systems that will drive startup culture, creation, innovation, investment and essentially economy development.

What the session will include - what subjects, case studies and what abstracts and presentations are we accepting?
  • Presentation of successful innovative entrepreneurship support systems
  • Presentation of best practices. The do’s and don’ts’s for such systems to exist and flourish. What are the factors contributing to such systems

    • Special Concentration: The successful systems of the West vs the Challenges of the East
      • The case of Cyprus: The Challenges. What must be done?. The do’s and don’ts to achieve it
